Daniel Méthot appointed director of sports programs at McGill Athletics & Recreation

MONTREAL – Daniel Méthot has been appointed director of sports programs at McGill University.

A native of Montreal, Que., Méthot was manager of varsity sports at the Université du Québec à Montréal for the past 14 years. Prior to that posting, he served for 11 years as executive director for the Quebec Basketball Federation, from 1997 to 2008.

A founding member of the Quebec Basketball Hall of Fame, he was the head basketball coach at Collège Lionel-Groulx, and has served as chef de mission for Team Quebec at various international sporting events, including the 2001 Jeux de la Francophonie.

Méthot holds a master's degree in sociology from  Université de Montréal (1995) and a bachelor's degree with honours from Bishop's (1992).

"We conducted an extensive search for this position and were very pleased to find a person of Daniel's experience and character, said Geoffrey Phillips, the executive director of athletics and recreation. "We wanted someone with a strong background in elite sport management as well as an extensive knowledge of both the RSEQ and U SPORTS and he fits both profiles."

Méthot, will oversee and lead the areas of varsity and competitive sport programs, student-athlete recruitment, admissions, eligibility and the Women in Sport program. He will also lead and drive the strategic vision related to these areas. "To join such a storied and prestigious institution as McGill at this point in my career is an opportunity that does not present itself too often," said Méthot. "I look forward to working with many high-profile leaders, coaches and administrators at the University and contributing to the success of all the Martlets and Redbirds teams, both on the field and in the classroom."

Méthot will join McGill Athletics and Recreation on Monday, May 30.
