This year, McGill Sports Camp celebrates forty years of service to the Montreal community. Since the very first camp day, McGill Athletics and Recreation has been committed to inspiring youths to engage in sports and recreational activities and to live an active and healthy lifestyle. Throughout the decades, every aspect of McGill Sports Camp has been designed with campers’ enjoyment and safety in mind. The goal has been to keep campers moving and engaged in physical activity with an array of sports and aquatic activities that contribute to character-building, teamwork, discipline and perseverance.
“We are grateful that families continue choosing us to be apart of their summer,” says Perry Karnofsky, Director of Services, WellnessPrograms and Facility Operations at McGill Athletics and Recreation. “Our success and longevity are due to McGill’s extensive recreational facilities, and the quality of our McGill University student staff.”
Countless former campers have returned to McGill as students and to camp as staff members, eager to give back to the community. These individuals bring with them a deep understanding of the camp's values, enriching the experience for the next generation of campers. DanaCarleton, Manager of Children’sProgramming and Internal Events, credits this to the camp’s ongoing success. “At McGill Sports Camp, our entire community actively takes part in embodying our mission and values, creating an atmosphere in which teamwork, respect, and physical literacy can flourish.”
Today, children and teenagers between the ages of 6 and 15 are welcome to take part in camp at the McGillSports Complex throughout the summer months and/or during winter break week. Every aspect of McGill Sports Camp is designed to inspire and challenge our campers, and to provide them with a positive experience. “My son had a great time at McGill SportsCamp. He not only enjoyed all the activities but also made some great friends. The supportive community at camp created an environment in which he felt valued and encouraged,” says Crystal Ceh, fitness manager at Athletics and Recreation.
Over the years, the camp team has implemented several new initiatives to stay in line with the changing interests and needs of camp participants. For example, new, non-traditional activities have become a favourite amongst campers, including gaga ball and tchoukball. Moreover, for those who want to sharpen their skills in a specifics port, The Martlets and Redbirds Academy of Sports, led by McGill varsity coaches and athletes, was introduced.
McGill Athletics and Recreation is proud of the reputation that McGill Sports Camp has built in the past forty years and is dedicated to continuously improving the camp experience for all campers for years to come.
