If you are experiencing the winter blues or want to avoid them, here are a few tips to help you stay well this season from Kiki Yelle, Local Wellness Advisor for McGill Athletics and Recreation.

For many, colder weather and shorter days can be difficult to navigate. If you are experiencing the winter blues or want to avoid them, here are a few tips to help you stay well this season from Kiki Yelle, Local Wellness Advisor for McGill Athletics and Recreation

1.     Stay hydrated.

While hot beverages are appealing during the cold winter months, it is important to keep drinking water as well. As part of a complete diet, as recommended by the Dietitians of Canada, do your best to drink anywhere from 7 to 12 glasses of water a day (individual needs vary) to avoid dehydration.

2.     Exercise for your mental and physical health.

It is important to stay well and active all year round, even when the weather gets a little harsher. At the McGill Sports Complex, members and clients can choose from a variety of recreational activities to keep them moving, such as martial arts, sports and swimming, pick-up sports and lap swimming. In addition, the Complex boasts a well-equipped gym and private workout pods if you are looking for a complete workout. According to the Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety, even a daily, 30-minute walk can drastically improve your mood.

3.     Enjoy the sunlight as much as you can.

While sunny winter days can be deceivingly cold, the Canadian Red Cross recommends taking in sunlight to improve your mental and physical health. Therefore, try to get outside during sunlight hours every day or consider adding a vitamin D supplement to your diet. Please consult your healthcare physician before taking any new supplements.

4.     Stay social and have fun!

It’s no secret that socializing is beneficial to our physical and mental well-being. However, if the colder winter days have made planning outdoor activities more cumbersome, consider working out at the McGill B2 Gym or in a private workout pod with a friend, taking a group fitness class together, or exercising with a partner at home.
